Mission and People

Why Our Mission is to Create Jobs for People with disAbilities

We believe people with disabilities represent a great, untapped, resource in our community. When given the right vocational opportunity, people with disabilities can reduce their dependence on family members and government-funded services and become productive members of our society.

Blue Star Recyclers was created out of the recognition that some individuals with developmental disabilities, especially those with autism, excel at the type of disassembly and separation activity required to ethically recycle electronic components. In essence, Blue Star marries this necessary job task with the unique skill set of our target population.

Amazing Work Ethic

Productivity and Work Ethic

When our disabled work team first arrived at Blue Star Recyclers in early 2010, they could dismantle and separate around 10,000 pounds of computer base materials per month. The team is currently processing over 20,000 pounds of material each month. With virtually the same personnel, the team has doubled its level of production!

Our team's commitment to their jobs is a model of excellence. Since the program began, team members have called in sick less than one day per year. One employee missed his bus and walked over four miles to work! Blue Star has experienced zero employee attrition and virtually no accidents or incidents of injury. We believe the skill and dedication of our crew is unrivalled.

Personal Growth

Personal Growth

When given the opportunity to demonstrate productivity, our employees have thrived in all aspects of their lives. For many of our team members, the job at Blue Star Recyclers represents the first time they have felt truly valued as productive individuals. Through this feeling of validation, our workers have experienced dramatic physical and behavioral improvement. Negative outbursts, once commonplace, have disappeared; individuals that were virtually non-verbal when they first arrived at Blue Star, have now become social. Although some team members suffered frequent seizures in previous work settings, Blue Star Recyclers has not experienced a single seizure on the work-floor. Every single day on the job, our team members reach new benchmarks and redefine their potential for success.

Saving Taxpayers

Savings for Taxpayers

People with developmental disabilities face over 80% unemployment in Southern Colorado. Without the opportunity to work, most people with autism and other developmental disabilities are entirely dependent on government benefits and taxpayer funded services. Employment helps to break this level of dependence. The earned income from the 10 workers on our team reduces their combined social security payments by $11,391.72 a year. By virtue of being in a work program versus a community participation program, we are saving Medicaid $11,040 a year. Since establishing the work program at Blue Star Recyclers, we estimate that we have saved taxpayers $48,108.78!

Extending the Mission

In addition to our mission to create jobs through the ethical recycling of electronics, Blue Star Recyclers was founded with a commitment to invest in the communities we serve. We measure our success based upon the impact we have on the local community, the local environment, and the local economy. To discover how we are doing in each of these areas, please see our Triple Bottom Line Report Card.

Whenever possible, Blue Star Recyclers looks to expand our mission by forming partnerships with other leaders in the community. Blue Star Recyclers have partnered with several businesses and organizations in the formation of collection depot sites throughout Southern Colorado. These depots not only make recycling more convenient for our communities, they also produce revenue, create jobs, and provide smaller communities with an ongoing solution to electronic waste.
